A SONG FOR THE RIVER

A soon as most people learn about the craziness of this so-called ‘abstraction’ scheme, they join the tens of thousands who say ‘no’ to it. So - for these last few weeks before our petition ends - we wanted to make it easy for people to really ‘get’ the various reasons (and there are many) why this scheme is such a bad idea, and why so many of us object to it so strongly.

That’s why we’ve ‘revisited’ a song that many of you will know. (No? Then maybe ask a friend about the original!.) The aim is that - together - we reach at least 100k signatures by 1st November 2026.

We invite you to share - one way or another

To the right are six short verses. Each brings home a different aspect of why we object so strongly to this scheme.

Feel free to share the YouTube links via Social channels, including LinkedIn and Facebook. You can download the full lyrics here.

Below each individual verse, we’ve plucked out an excerpt and have added some brief notes.

Three kinds of people we call on to sign and share

Maybe you’re local - living in one of the five places mentioned in verse three. If so, you’ll want to know exactly how this scheme impacts you. (During the four years of its proposed creation & thereafter.) After all, it’s odds on that you weren’t ever invited to attend a consultation.

Maybe the Thames is your river too - whether you live upstream or downstream of Teddington, we do need to pull together to protect this precious resource and our communities that surround it.

Maybe you just care - as a UK resident - about the social and environmental impacts of decisions made by water companies & others who put shareholder profit before the long-term well-being (and the wallets!) of everyone else.

Which verse will resonate most strongly with you?

Some of you will be curious to know more. Some of you will be sitting on details and data about this scheme that deeply concern you.

We believe these six verses - by being ‘out there’ - can connect those with questions & those with answers, & make visible the kind of open dialogue that should have underpinned this scheme from the very beginning.
