MAY 2026 TDRA CONSULTATION

Thames Water’s Updated Sewage Pump Consultation Reveals DEVASTATING Scale OF RIVER AND Community Impact and ANTICIPATED increasing costs.

Thames Water has quietly expanded its proposed Teddington scheme and it’s now far bigger, longer, and more damaging than first presented (see pictures below). The latest plans include:

  • Four years of construction - double the original timeline
  • 14,000 HGV movementsmore than double previous estimates
  • Significant loss and disruption to open space
  • Much larger permanent infrastructure along the river

Read our press release on the changes here.

It’s important to remember, this expansion of destruction comes at a time when this stretch of the Thames has been recognised as an official bathing water site, highlighting how important it is to protect.

Have your say;

The consultation is now open , deadline 18th June; this is the moment to object.

We URGE people to sign our parliamentary petition; to ask for better standards for new sewage treatment infrastrucutre in the UK; This is to amplify our voice and highlights the contradictions between TDRA as a supposed future proof scheme and also the mis-match to the new Bathing Water status designation; click here

Act now

If we don’t speak up, this will go ahead. Take a few minutes to object — and share this with others who care about protecting the Thames.

As SOLAR, we will review the new consultation information in detail and provide more insight on how best to respond as we do.

Guide to Responding to the Thames Water Supplementary Consultation (May 2026)

You do NOT need to be an expert to respond to this consultation.
You do not need to answer every question, write a long response or live near Burnell Avenue to take part.
What matters most is that people respond in their own words and explain why they are concerned.

The consultation is specifically asking for views on:
-the permanent infrastructure planned near Burnell Avenue,
-the revised construction impacts,
-the consultation process itself.

Key Issues You May Wish To Raise
The scheme has significantly increased in scale. The updated consultation documents show:
-Construction near Burnell Avenue increasing from around 2 years to around 4 years
-HGV movements increasing from around 6,246 to around 14,000
-Larger permanent infrastructure being proposed in open space areas
-Additional maintenance hatches and underground equipment
-A larger control building and expanded intake structure
-Many people feel these changes are far more significant than Thames Water suggests.

The impacts on the riverside and open space are serious: You may wish to raise concerns about:
-Loss of open space character
-Industrialisation of the riverside
-Visual impact of new infrastructure
-Increased fencing and security measures
-Long-term maintenance access
-Impacts on wildlife and recreation
-Impacts on swimmers, walkers, kayakers, rowers and other river users

Construction impacts have escalated dramatically- You may wish to comment on:
-Four years of disruption
-Increased lorry movements
-Noise and vibration
-Air quality concerns
-Traffic impacts
-Possible nighttime works
-Lack of clear mitigation measures

The consultation lacks detail- Some people are concerned that:
-Major design changes are being introduced after the 2025 statutory consultation
-Important information is missing or deferred to the future DCO stage
-Changes at Mogden Sewage Treatment Works are mentioned but not properly explained
-The environmental and financial implications of the revised plans are unclear
-The consultation materials understate the significance of the changes.

Suggested Example Response
The following is only an example. People are strongly encouraged to adapt this wording and respond in their own words where possible.
"I am very concerned by the latest changes being proposed for the TDRA scheme near Burnell Avenue.
The updated plans appear significantly larger, more disruptive and more industrial than those presented in previous consultations.
I am particularly concerned by the increase in construction duration from around two years to around four years, and the increase in HGV movements from around 6,246 to around 14,000.
The expanded intake structure, additional hatches, enlarged control building and increased permanent infrastructure would significantly harm the character of the riverside and open space.
I do not believe the consultation materials provide enough detail about the likely impacts on noise, traffic, air quality, maintenance activity, visual amenity and public use of the area.
I am also concerned that major design changes are being introduced after the statutory consultation process in 2025,
without the level of environmental detail that residents would reasonably expect.
The River Thames is an important recreational and environmental asset used by swimmers, walkers, kayakers, rowers, paddleboarders, wildlife groups and families across the area. The latest proposals would further industrialise this stretch of the river and open space.
I do not believe the current consultation provides sufficient information for the public to fully assess the implications of these changes.
I ask Thames Water to reconsider these revised proposals and provide fuller public consultation on the impacts, alternatives and associated changes linked to the wider TDRA scheme."
